Aid to Victims of Domestic Abuse has various volunteer opportunities, including
internships in social work, counseling, psychology, legal assistance, non-profit
administration and other related fields. These opportunities are available to individuals
sensitive to the needs of battered women and their children and students working toward
their associate, bachelors, and graduate degrees. The agency is also a placement site for
those working towards licensure as a Licensed Professional Counselor or Social Worker. We
ask individuals to commit for a specified term, generally a minimum of six months or until
their internship is complete. The monthly commitment required will depend upon the
position, the needs of the program, and the individuals schedule.

Perform general office duties such as answering the telephone, filing, copying and data
entry. There is no specific time commitment for this position, however, only daytime
positions are available.

Assist in the expansion of public awareness about the agency and the issues involved with
domestic violence. Individuals staff tables at information fairs and deliver presentations
for the agency. In addition, this position involves assisting with special events. This is
an as needed position and it does not require a regular work schedule.

Help facilitate groups for men who are violent, abusive and/or controlling in their
intimate relationships. This includes attending group, assisting with group planning,
preparing case notes and reports and assisting with case management duties. Volunteers
must be able to commit to a regular schedule of three to four hours per week. Most groups
are held during the evening in Houston and various outlying communities.

Provide crisis counseling, safety planning, advocacy, information and referral to victims
of domestic violence. Volunteers providing victim services at the Legal Advocacy Project
must be able to work a minimum of one three-hour shift per week during regular business
hours. Victim Advocates assisting the Partner Advocate for the Battering
Intervention Program may be able to
work on an as needed basis.
Individuals may volunteer for one or more of the above positions, or they may perform
various special projects. We are also willing to develop positions and
projects for individuals with special skills and/or interests that do not fall within the
parameters of the above positions.

- Schedule an
individual placement meeting.
- Attend the
training sessions required for the position(s) in which she/he has
been placed.

Staff work with the student to design an internship that fulfills the school/program
requirements and offers the student practical experience that will further her/his career
goals. The following list is an example of the type of experience one might gain through
an internship at our agency:

- Grassroots organizing and systems advocacy

- Public speaking and community education
- Volunteer management
- Professional writing (grants, newsletters,
training materials)
